RAP offers Learner Driver Licence courses throughout the year.
Support to gain the Learner Driver Licence
We offer a 3-week course, with two sessions each week on Mondays and Thursdays. Each session lasts for two and a half hours. If you register, we expect you to attend all 6 sessions.
The test for the Learner Licence usually takes place during session six at the local AA or VTNZ office. You sit the test when you are ready.
The course is free and you will learn by:
listening to the tutor, and asking the tutor questions;
reading the Road Code;
watching and discussing videos; and
practising for the test using resources in the room as well as online.
RAP can assist you in applying for evidence of your identity.
RAP will cover the cost* of the Learner Licence test fee (when you are ready to sit).
*If you are referred by an agency or support service then the test fee is to be paid by the support service provider.
-
You will need to provide ID before you sit the Learner Licence theory test, e.g.
a birth certificate (original), passport* or a ‘Certificate of Identity’.
Some form of photo ID if you don’t have a passport, e.g. 18+ card, student ID.
Proof of address on a bank statement, utility bill (power or water), or MyIR (IRD number)

What do you need to get your Restricted or Full Licence?
NZTA recommends 120+ hours driving practice with a supervisor before you sit the test.
You can practice with a family member or friend as your driving supervisor (someone who has held their NZ Full Driver licence for 2 years or more), or with a driving instructor.
We do not provide driving lessons to build up your driving hours or to teach you how to drive.
We offer a few limited opportunities to local residents living in Rānui who are keen to gain their Restricted or Full Driver Licence.
If you have your Learner Licence – even if you’ve had it for ages but just haven’t had the chance to take the next step; and
if you have practical driving experience (120+ hours).
